Cedar Creek Cemetery is a private family cemetery and is located along County Road 124, in Sanderson, Florida. It was started by pioneer families that lived in the area known as Cedar Creek.  Some of the families included: Combs, Davis, Dopson, Dorman, Dugger, Harvey, Johnson, and Williams. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Baker County.

According to local historian Gene Barber, "Sanderson started as an entity about 3 1/2 miles north of its present day location and was on the old plank Jacksonville-Tallahassee road. Its name was Cedar Creek and a congestion of residents was known to be there prior to 1840, a result of settlers keeping close to a fortified site near the present day Cedar Creek Cemetery.

About 1835 John and Mary(Alexander)Harvey moved to old Columbia county(present day Baker), Florida and settled on Cedar Creek. With them were John Jr. and Isaac, both of whom were undoubtedly sons. Also, among the immigrants to the Florida territory was a known daughter Sarah who was the mother of John Daniel Williams. The elder Harveys dropped from public records about 1845, possible victims of the Second Seminole War. Some of the older Harveys think they might have been buried in present day Cedar Creek Cemetery.

The Harvey settlement was on the bank of Cedar Creek on an elevation where a little branch merged with the creek. As were all the early homes, it was fortified with a tall stockade fence of sharpened pine trunks buried on end around the cabin. Besides the legends from area residents, there are a few known brief mentions of this 'fort' in military writings.

Cedar Creek continued as a lively spot until the disastrous Malaria epidemic of 1888, and it still possessed a few residents into the first years of the 20th century. Most of its leading citizens such as Pons, Oglesbys, Chalkers, and Herndons had already moved into Sanderson by the early 1870's and the other old-line families, Harveys, Davises, Johnsons, Yelvingtons either went to Glen or Sanderson. In other words, "Cedar Creek just moved away, and most of it went into creating Sanderson."

Land for Cedar Creek Cemetery was first deeded to the Cedar Creek Cemetery board of trustees October 30th, 1905, by Harney J. and Barbara Davis. The original trust was comprised of I.J. Davis, E.E. Davis, and A. J. Dorman. Harney had acquired the land in July 1904 from The United States government under an Act of Congress which was approved, May 20th 1862, "to secure Homesteads to Actual Settlers on the Public Domain. By 1905, Cedar Creek Cemetery had already been in use as a cemetery since approximately the 1840's. Earliest burials were marked with wooden boards cut from the nearby woods. Most of which have since rotted away. A few old pieces of wooden markers remain with some of the graves now marked with granite headstones reading, "unknown".   The oldest stone headstones in the cemetery are ones for Charles Isaac Dopson and Theodora Lugg Dopson, both buried in 1860.  Additional land donations from the Mann family, have increased the overall size of Cedar Creek Cemetery to 25.09 acres total.

Gene also noted," The New River (Baker) County delegate to the Florida Secession Convention in 1860 was a dentist of modest means and a Primitive, Baptist preacher of dubious orthodoxy. Although he pastored and supplied in most area churches of that faith somewhat to their satisfaction, Dr. Isaac C. Koon drew their ire when he began to spread a 'no-Hell' doctrine. Dr. Koon founded the "No Hell" Baptist Church at what we now know as Cedar Creek Cemetery after his return from fighting with the Confederacy during the War Between the States. He said that after four years of war, he had seen hell and he did not believe God would, be responsible for such a place and that mankind created its own hell on earth. The other Baptists referred to his followers as 'Koonitics' and called their meeting house 'the No-Hell Baptist Church.'

The old wood frame 'No Hell Baptist church' sat in the middle of Cedar Creek Cemetery until the early 1960's when it was torn down. The salvaged pieces of wood from the church were used to build the home of Charlie and Gussie(Dorman) Harvey which still stands to this day, down Fred Harvey Road in Sanderson. (A picture of the old wooden church can be viewed in our gallery.) A block structure was then built from donations collected from the local populace and was built by men from the various families buried at Cedar Creek.  The intent for this block structure was to be a means for family members to get out of the weather(rain, cold, heat, etc.) during funerals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you allow burial of cremated remains?
Yes, cremains are allowed in our cemetery.  However, the grave must be opened and closed by a licensed funeral director and an urn sized vault is required, for placement of the remains.  Unauthorized digging in a cemetery in the state of Florida is against the law.

What is the timeframe for placement of headstones following a death?

Ideally, we would like the gravesite marked with a permanent stone marker within 1 year of the burial.  However, we do understand that placement of a memorial marker is a very personal decision that is emotionally hard and can be financially challenging to some of our  families.  Do keep in mind that the temporary funeral home markers are being made of plastic nowadays and hence are easily damaged and can become illegible after a few years.

Who do I contact to request burial in Cedar Creek Cemetery?

Please feel free to contact one of our trustees by phone:  Don't be offended if they ask the deceased's familial connection in order to determine eligibility into Cedar Creek Cemetery.  We are a private family cemetery and are not open to the general public.

Who mows the grass?

We do not have a lawn service or inmate work crews. If you have loved ones buried in Cedar Creek Cemetery, it is your responsibility to help out to keep the cemetery mowed and cleaned, year round.  We conduct cemetery cleanings a couple of times throughout the year and ask that you participate.  We have set Cemetery cleaning work days for the 3rd Saturday in April, July, and September.  However, feel free to clean your individual plots whenever  you're able.

Who carries the trash away?

We have no dumpster or trash service.  When you visit the cemetery, bring a trash bag with you to place your trash in and then take it with you when you leave. Please do not place trash in a pile by the front gate or thrown into the woods. It is all of our responsibility to keep our family cemetery clean.

Are glass items allowed within the cemetery?

For obvious reasons, we prefer that you do not place any glass items within the cemetery.  All it takes is one strong wind to blow through and things get broken and then become a hazard.

Cleaning of headstones.

Headstones are a major investment and great care should be taken to protect them.  Any cleaning products used should be free of abrasives, chlorine, acids, etc.  that may damage your stone's finish or soften the stone itself over time.  We recommend D2, it's a biological agent, that is used on the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery and the White House. It's biodegradable,  easy to use, and has produced very good results.  Before and after pictures of a couple of headstones are available in the gallery.  They were taken after one application of D2 solution. Please , we ask NO pressure washing, paint application, or chalking.

Are donations accepted?

Yes,  checks can be made out to Cedar Creek Cemetery and mailed to our secretary/treasurer, Melissa Harvey Norman at 11022 Pee Wee Harvey Place Sanderson Florida 32087.  We run on donations, recent donations were responsible for enlarging our fence at the back of the cemetery and we thank all who contributed.

How are burial plots assigned?

First, you must make contact with one of our trustees.  They will meet you at the cemetery and available locations will be offered.  Placement of corner markers are not allowed unless a trustee has given the authorization and verified correct placement.

Are burials being accepted in the new section at the back of the cemetery?

At this time, we continue to only accept burials into the old section of the cemetery.  Once the newly fenced section, at the back of the cemetery, is properly laid out and platted, we will begin accepting burials into that area, as well.

Do I really need to attend the meetings that are held?

The short answer is YES.  Meetings are an opportunity to hear about issues that are affecting our cemetery and maybe offer your input, advice, or assistance, in order to get them resolved.  No decisions are ever made by just one person, alone.  The people that are elected as your board members are expected to be dependable, responsible, and above all try to do what's in the best interest of the cemetery and our families, at all times.

Are the cemetery gates locked?
The small gates remain unlocked at all times to allow families access to the cemetery. Our large gates are kept locked and can be opened if needed, by contacting one of the board members. The large gates initially started being kept locked at all times in the early 1980's on the advice of then Baker County judge, D.L. Griffis.  This was done in order to secure the cemetery grounds and prevent unauthorized access.
